Family Health Services are designed to promote and optimize children’s growth and development. The focus is on support, prevention, and education to promote and maintain a high level of wellness for individuals and families in Houston County.

Parents and children can benefit from the following services available through Houston County Public Health:

Child and Teen Checkup Logo

Child and Teen Checkups is a benefit for children in Minnesota who are eligible for Medical Assistance (Medicaid).
C&TC includes well child checkups that help track growth and development, identify any potential concerns, and create a health relationships with a healthcare provider. As children grow up the checkups help them learn how to take charge of their own health.

Family home visiting is a voluntary service that is offered prenatally through the first few years of a child's life. This service provides social, emotional, health-related and parenting support and information to families while linking them to the appropriate resources.

The Follow Along Program is a free program that supports families with babies and young children as they grow and learn. Our public health office will send periodic questionnaires to assess your child's developmental progress. Once the form is returned to public health our team will provide families with activities to do with their children to help them explore and learn through play.

WIC Picture

WIC is the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. This program is a nutrition and breastfeeding program that helps eligible pregnant women, new mothers, babies and young children. WIC provides nutrition education and counseling, nutritious foods, and referrals to other resources and services.

Houston County Public Health Office now has child vaccines available for families in our community. Our clinic participates in the Minnesota Vaccines for Children (MnVFC) Program, which provides free or low-cost vaccines to eligible children from birth through 18 years of age. The program ensures that cost is not a barrier for families and that all children can receive the vaccines they need to stay healthy.

Children may qualify if they are uninsured, underinsured, enrolled in Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare, or are American Indian or Alaska Native.

Not sure which vaccines you or your child may need? You can check your Minnesota Immunization Information Connection (MIIC) record in three ways.

  • Search for your immunization record using your first name, last name, date of birth, and legal sex

Does your child need a car seat? Our Car Seat Program is designed to support families by ensuring that every child travels safely, regardless of income or circumstance. We provide education, hands‑on support, and access to properly fitted car seats so parents and caregivers can feel confident that their children are protected.

Our certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians offer personalized car seat checks, guidance on correct installation and use, and up‑to‑date information on Minnesota’s safety laws and best practices. Whether a family needs help choosing the right seat, installing it correctly, or replacing an outdated or unsafe seat, our team is here to help.

If you’re interested in a car seat check or would like to see if your child qualifies for a free car seat, please contact our Health Educator at 507‑725‑5810. You can also talk with your Public Health Nurse during your next home visit or WIC appointment.
