Records & Data Requests
The Houston County Sheriff's Office provides public access to government data in accordance with the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act (MGDPA), Minnesota Statutes Chapter 13. Under Minnesota law, government data is presumed public unless otherwise classified by state or federal law.
Members of the public may request access to records maintained by the Sheriff’s Office, including incident reports, arrest information, jail records, calls for service, accident reports, and other law enforcement data permitted for public release under Minnesota law.
Some information may be classified as private, confidential, or protected nonpublic and may not be released. Protected information will be withheld or redacted before release.
How to Submit a Records or Data Request
You must complete a Data Request Form and submit it to the Houston County Sheriff’s Office in one of the following ways:
- By email
- By mail
- In person during business hours
Processing Time and Fees
The Houston County Sheriff’s Office will respond to requests in a reasonable amount of time as required by Minnesota law. Response times may vary depending on the size and complexity of the request.
Applicable fees may be charged for:
- Printed copies
- Electronic media/secure link
- Extensive searches or data compilation
- Transcription
